On 16th February 1909, an explosion underground at the Burns Pit in West Stanley, Co Durham which resulted in the death of 168 men and boys. On Saturday 14th Feb 2009, there will be a Memorial Service to mark the 100 years since that tragic didsaster at St Andrew's Church, Stanley at 12.00 noon. It is hoped to have a colliery band, a local male voice choir, a replica of the former pit banner and a small dispaly. More information to follow nearer the date.
