Stanley was formed out of the parish of Tanfield and includes
Annfield Plain, Craghead, Dipton, South Moor, Stanley and
Tanfield & District

The main history of the area goes back to AD 120-240 when there was a Roman
Camp surrounded by a ditch (vallum) and turf walls. This camp was situated in
the area behind what is now the Stanley Northern Bus Depot. Roman soldiers
were stationed there to protect their cattle and sheep from marauding Scots.

At the time of William the Conquerer, Tanfield was listed as a Manor. The
monks of Chester-le-Street had a church here around AD 900. They built a
stone edifice around 1060AD which was used for weekly service.

The next major development of the town came in the 19th century when coal
was discovered in large quantities, resulting in at least 1 colliery in every village
